Plan for the best: Life & Business tips for dad-preneurs

This month, June 18 is Father’s Day so let’s give a little love to all you Dads out there who work hard for your families. Dad-preneurs don’t usually get much attention, especially on social media, but we know you are out there putting the “Dad brand” on everything you do.

Dad-preneurs don’t usually get much attention, especially on social media, but we know you are out there putting the “Dad brand” on everything you do.

Although some fathers have a reputation for compartmentalizing their lives, there are so many issues that crossover from work into our home lives. Here are some of the questions we hear that are keeping Dads up at night:

  • Am I saving enough for my children’s college AND my retirement?
  • Is my family budget as realistic as my business’ budget? Do I manage both with a critical eye?
  • Do I devote enough time to educating my children about the value of money (emphasizing that it is not a quest for more things)?
  • Am I taking enough downtime to support self-care and a long-lasting relationship with family?
  • What will my legacy be?

These are big questions for big shoulders. Yet, there are many ways to help put some shuteye back into those long nights.

First, if you own a business, have a succession plan in place and a clear path of beneficial ownership if you were to pass away unexpectedly. Next, gain peace of mind in your home life with a will and trust, including powers of attorney and advance health care directives. If you are divorced, be sure child custody arrangements are clear and beneficiaries on any funds are updated. Hoping for the best is healthy, but planning is key should the worst happen.

Once all these plans are set in place, take some downtime for yourself. Summer is a great time to sit back, perhaps beneath your favorite tree, and reflect on how far you have come and be grateful for the blessings you have today. This reflection will be much easier knowing that the future is well-planned and supported. It can be lonely at the top, especially if you are also a dad, so don’t forget that SAGE Business Counsel is here to help you protect your legacy and support you in your entrepreneurial journey. Have a Happy Fathers’ Day, and thank you for all you do for your families and your business!
